Shahnavaz Khan earns long jump bronze for India at World U20 Championships

Shahnavaz Khan won bronze in the men's long jump at the World Athletics U20 Championships on August 9, 2026, recording a best leap of 7.84m. The result was India's third medal of the competition, following silver medals won by Ashish Yadav and Basant Meghwal.

Khan advanced to the final after a qualifying jump of 7.73m and improved his mark during the medal round, producing the 7.84m effort on his third attempt. No athlete in the final managed to clear the 8m barrier.

Khan opened the final with jumps of 7.67m and 7.72m before landing his 7.84m third attempt; his fourth measured 7.52m and his best remained 7.84m. Italy's Daniele Leonardo Inzoli claimed gold with 7.97m while Australia's Mason McGroder took silver with 7.96m.

There was concern after Khan's final jump when he appeared to suffer a cramp and remained on his knees, visibly frustrated as he waited to see if the field could better his mark; none did, and he held on to bronze. India's other finalist, R.C. Jithin Arjunan, finished eighth with a best of 7.59m.

Khan's medal capped a period of rapid improvement: over the past four months he raised his personal best to 8.23m and then to 8.30m, won gold at the Asian U20 Championships, breached the qualification mark for the 2026 Asian Games, became India's third-best long jumper of all time and broke the U20 national record prior to reaching the World U20 final.

Khan grew up in Madhaipur village in Uttar Pradesh's Pratapgarh district; his father drove a taxi. His uncle Shahrukh is a former National Games champion in the 3000m steeplechase and another uncle, Mohammad Hadees, was a former national-level javelin thrower who has been a key inspiration for him.

The bronze is India's first World-level medal in men's long jump, marking a significant milestone for the discipline and another breakthrough for Indian athletics at the U20 World Championships.
