Shnaider defeats Boulter in Wuhan first round

Katie Boulter was beaten by Diana Shnaider in the first round of the Wuhan Open on 13 October 2026, losing 6-3 6-1 in one hour and 30 minutes to exit the tournament.
Katie Boulter is the 23rd woman to hold the British number one ranking and is ranked 54th in the world; this season she has posted just two wins across the four Grand Slam tournaments. Since suffering a first-round exit at Wimbledon in June, Boulter has won three of the nine singles matches she has played on the WTA Tour. The result came amid personal bereavement after her grandfather, Brian, died last week; her brother James described him as "Katie's biggest supporter" and Boulter said in a social media tribute before competing in Wuhan that she had experienced "a tough week".
After a competitive opening set, Boulter's level fell in the second as she lost her serve four times and Shnaider closed out the match. Shnaider is ranked world number 13 and produced a decisive second set to secure victory. The match lasted one hour and 30 minutes.
Separately, Russia and Belarus remain suspended from the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup team competitions following a vote among World Tennis member nations on Tuesday. The two countries were suspended by World Tennis - formerly known as the International Tennis Federation (ITF) - in March 2022 after Russia began a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, backed by its ally Belarus.
At the world governing body's annual general meeting in Kazakhstan, officials from 128 nations voted to keep the suspensions of the Russian Tennis Federation and the Belarus Tennis Federation in place. That vote came despite the International Olympic Committee no longer recommending international federations continue restrictions on Russian and Belarusian athletes.
Players such as French Open semi-finalist Shnaider, former world number one Daniil Medvedev and world number two Aryna Sabalenka will continue to compete as neutrals under ATP and WTA rules. Neither tour is planning to change their existing policy at this moment in time.
Boulter's defeat eliminates her from the Wuhan Open, while the World Tennis vote maintains the exclusion of the Russian and Belarusian federations from World Tennis competitions, including the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup.
