Shubman Gill could be rested for the final two One-Day Internationals of India's 2026 tour of New Zealand, with Shreyas Iyer likely to assume captaincy for those matches, according to reports.

India are set for a long all-format tour of New Zealand that includes T20Is, a five-match ODI series and two Tests. The T20I series will be played first, followed by the five-match ODI series. The tour will then move into the red-ball format with two Tests scheduled.

Shubman Gill is expected to lead India in both the ODI and Test series. Shreyas Iyer is set to captain the T20I side. Those leadership assignments were announced as part of the tour plans.

Dainik Jagran reported that Shreyas Iyer is likely to replace Shubman Gill as India’s ODI captain for the fourth and fifth matches of the series. The reports link that development to the short gap between the ODI and Test series. The possible change would affect the closing fixtures of the five-match ODI sequence.
