Shubman Gill struck on elbow in nets ahead of India’s opening ODI vs West Indies

Shubman Gill was hit on the elbow during a nets session in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday, September 25, while India prepared to begin their three-match ODI series against West Indies; he left the nets for treatment before later returning to practice.

The series forms part of India’s preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup and will open in Thiruvananthapuram. Shubman Gill will lead the side, with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli included in the squad, while Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad provide additional batting options. India must also address the No. 4 position in Shreyas Iyer’s absence as they finalise combinations ahead of the opener.

The injury occurred during a net session when a rising delivery from Mohammed Siraj struck Gill on the elbow. The India captain appeared to be in pain and had to leave the nets for treatment following the blow. Team staff attended to him immediately at the practice facility.

According to Cricbuzz, Gill needed nearly 20 minutes of medical attention after being hit. After receiving treatment, the right-handed batter returned to the nets and faced throwdowns before India’s training session ended. The incident has raised concerns just two days before India are scheduled to face West Indies in the first ODI.

Gill’s return to practice after treatment offered some immediate reassurance to the squad, though selectors and medical staff will require further assessment to confirm match availability. The timing of the incident has increased attention on the captain’s condition in the lead-up to the series opener.

India are scheduled to hold a press conference on Saturday, which could provide more information about the captain’s condition. The first ODI between India and West Indies is scheduled for September 27 in Thiruvananthapuram.
