Sitanshu Kotak explained why Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been named for India’s upcoming New Zealand T20Is during a pre-match press conference in Ranchi on Thursday, ahead of the second T20I against the West Indies; Bhuvneshwar is not part of the current Ranchi squad. Kotak framed the recall as a selectors’ decision he can comment on from his perspective rather than as an official selection announcement.

Bhuvneshwar’s return follows almost four years away from international T20 cricket, with his last India appearance in November 2022, and has been driven in part by form in the Indian Premier League. Kotak pointed to the pacer’s performances for Royal Challengers Bengaluru across the last two IPL seasons, during which he contributed to RCB’s title wins in 2025 and 2026 and took 45 wickets across those two campaigns. Those IPL numbers have fed into the selection conversation even though Bhuvneshwar is not in the Ranchi playing group.

Kotak emphasised the value of experience within a young fast-bowling group, particularly recalling India’s England tour context. He said: "One thing is obviously with the selectors, but I can give you an answer based on what I think," and added: "In England, I personally felt that with Bumrah not being around and a lot of young bowlers playing, you can't beat experience."

Alongside experience, Kotak cited recent domestic form as a contributing factor to the recall. He said: "That might be one reason. Another thing is that Bhuvneshwar has been doing really well in the IPL for the last two seasons," and added: "So the selectors must have thought that, for New Zealand conditions and all, obviously he has been doing well and we need some experience." He also offered a personal take on the selectors’ thinking: "They must have picked him. That's what I can think, unless you can think something different."

Kotak addressed questions about Mohammed Shami’s absence from the current T20I set-up and said selectors will weigh performances and team requirements. He noted: "First of all, I am not a selector, so it is difficult for me to tell you that. But Shami is also playing and he is also doing well," and added: "If the selectors feel that he is doing well and the team has a requirement, then any player can be selected." The source also stated Shami last played for India in the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand in March 2025 and has since been working his way back through domestic cricket, producing encouraging performances.

India enter the Ranchi game on the back of a 10-match winning streak after an eight-wicket victory in the opening match of the five-match T20I series, and they had already won the preceding ODI series 2-1. Kotak spoke about balancing results with squad development: "To be honest, when you test your bench, if you win, the process continues. If you lose, there is a very thin line between maintaining that balance," and added: "But obviously, we try and do that. The promising players we have, the way the BCCI runs the system and the way our bench strength is developing, even if two or three of our teams were to play, they would look strong." He also warned of selection trade-offs: "But when you give chances to new players, some experienced players will miss out," and said: "Somewhere, if the opposition also plays well and it becomes a close match, at that time you feel that you are winning."

India’s immediate assignment remains the second T20I in Ranchi against the West Indies, which will provide another opportunity to extend the 10-match winning run while the selectors continue to assess options for future T20I assignments.
