Smotherman edges Seamus Power in Monday play-off to win Bermuda Championship

Austin Smotherman defeated Ireland's Seamus Power on the third extra hole to win the Bermuda Championship in a Monday play-off after the tournament's final round was cancelled due to bad weather.
Play was suspended on Sunday and organisers called off the scheduled final round; with further poor weather forecast for Monday, officials opted to decide the event by a sudden-death play-off between the 54-hole leaders at Port Royal Golf Course.
Smotherman parred the third extra hole to secure the title after a sequence of play-off drama that began on the par-three 16th. On the first play-off hole Power missed a 20-footer that would have given him the win, then got up and down from a bunker to extend the match before the contest moved to further holes.
The decisive moment came after the hole location had been changed; Smotherman two-putted from 15 feet to claim the victory while Power was unable to get up and down for par from the rough. The win followed extra-hole play after the leaders were level at the end of 54 holes.
The 32-year-old American recorded rounds of 65, 66 and 66 to finish 16 under through three rounds and claimed his second PGA Tour title, following a breakthrough victory in Utah earlier this month. "We're out here playing an incredible sport in a beautiful spot," said Smotherman. "Whatever things are going to be thrown at us, Zak [Williamson, caddie] and I were going to be on top of our game. "Yesterday I felt like we handled everything pretty well and the tour has been great at communicating what's going to happen today for us. "Once we got that news, it was nice to know what's going on. To come out on top is a cherry on top, so it's pretty awesome."
Power, the 2022 champion, carded rounds of 66, 64 and 67 to match Smotherman's 197 total but finished as runner-up. The 39-year-old played this season with conditional status and the runner-up finish effectively guarantees his PGA Tour card for 2027 after a strong week.
"Had a chance this morning, wasn't able to do it, which is disappointing, but overall great week, can't complain too much," said Power. "Hit some good shots in the playoff, just didn't quite judge the wind right, but that's golf sometimes. I'll move onwards."
Power entered the week 103rd in the FedEx Cup Fall standings and is projected to climb to 53rd, with the top 100 earning PGA Tour cards for next year.
