Sony unveils QSSR AI upscaling for base PS5; Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei among first games

Sony on October 2, 2026 introduced QSSR (Quick Spectral Super Resolution), an AI-driven upscaling system built for the base PlayStation 5. The company has already deployed the feature in Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei.
QSSR was developed through Project Amethyst, a graphics collaboration between PlayStation and AMD, and optimized specifically for standard PS5 hardware. Sony says the implementation uses a more efficient neural network together with hand-optimized techniques to boost visual fidelity and stability without requiring upgraded hardware. The company contrasted QSSR with PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), noting that PSSR remains the upscaler intended for the PS5 Pro.
According to PlayStation, QSSR delivers sharper visuals, improved image reconstruction and greater stability during gameplay. The technology is offered as an additional graphics option alongside existing Performance and Fidelity modes on supported titles. When enabled, QSSR is said to enhance fine environmental detail, improve texture clarity and deliver more stable visuals while aiming to provide smoother gameplay.
Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei are the first two titles to ship with QSSR support, and Sony has confirmed that more games will receive the upgrade in future updates. Support is currently limited to those two games. A user post highlighting the Wolverine implementation read: "Holy, background shimmering is gone after enabling it. #WolverinePS5 #PS5 pic.twitter.com/JWMJ76DTNt"
The article that announced QSSR also lists potential candidates for future upgrades, naming Phantom Blade Zero, GTA 6 and God of War: Laufey as examples of titles that could receive QSSR support. Sony’s initial rollout positions QSSR as a separate performance tier of AI upscaling born from Project Amethyst, according to the PlayStation announcement.
For now, players will find QSSR as a selectable graphics setting on supported PS5 versions of Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei, with Sony indicating additional titles will be added to the list of compatible games in time.
