Sooryavanshi falls for 92 in Duleep semi after becoming youngest fifty-maker

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi fell eight runs short of a maiden Duleep Trophy century in the semifinal against Central Zone at the BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground 1 in Bengaluru on Monday, but became the youngest player to post a fifty in Duleep Trophy history at 15 years and 157 days, reaching the mark in 42 balls.

The half-century snapped a 57-year-old benchmark previously held by Laxman Singh, who was 16 years and 23 days old when he reached fifty in the 1969 edition; Piyush Chawla is the second-youngest to record a Duleep fifty, reaching it at 16 years and 307 days in 2005. A century would have made Sooryavanshi the youngest Duleep centurion, a distinction currently held by Sachin Tendulkar, who was 17 years and 262 days when he scored a hundred in the 1990/91 season.

Sooryavanshi sealed his fifty with a six off Saransh Jain and, having been dropped on 40, proceeded to punish the bowling with a succession of boundaries. While on 81 he struck Saransh Jain for a four and a six to move into the nineties, he was caught by Arshad Khan off Harsh Dubey on the second ball of the 26th over, finishing 92 off 81 balls.

He combined with Abhimanyu Easwaran to post a 162-run opening partnership that established East Zone's platform in the match. The innings was recorded as his seventh score in the 90s in his career, alongside 11 centuries, and followed a Duleep Trophy debut in which he managed only eight runs.

Earlier in the fixture Sooryavanshi stood in as captain for Ishan Kishan for a few overs. East Zone dismissed Central Zone for 266 on the opening day, with India fast bowler Mukesh Kumar and right-arm medium pacer Abhijit Sarkar claiming three wickets apiece to bowl Central Zone out in 80.1 overs.

This fifty was Sooryavanshi's second in first-class cricket; his other half-century came in the previous Ranji Trophy season against Meghalaya, where he reached 50 in 33 balls. During the semifinal he attacked bowlers including Aryan Pandey, Yash Thakur, Arshad Khan, Saransh Jain and Harsh Dubey while also spending extended time at the crease compared with his debut.

Sooryavanshi's innings came during the Duleep Trophy semifinal against Central Zone, the penultimate stage of the competition.
