South Africa completed a famous victory over Australia on day five of the second Test at Gqeberha, winning by an innings and 31 runs and setting up a series decider in Cape Town.

The visitors had taken the first Test by 214 runs, but South Africa recovered after early trouble in this match; they were reduced to 40-4 and later 110-6 in their first innings before compiling 425-9 declared, powered by Bavuma's 179.

Marco Jansen contributed 85 in South Africa's first innings, and Travis Head top-scored for Australia with 121 in the second innings as the tourists were dismissed for 295.

On the bowling side, Scott Boland took 5-81 in South Africa's first innings while Kagiso Rabada finished with 4-77 in Australia's second innings; Wiaan Mulder returned figures of 3-64 and dismissed Head, Boland and captain Pat Cummins.

Marco Jansen had earlier claimed 5-33 on day four to put South Africa in the ascendancy and then took the final wicket as Australia were bowled out for 295.

Rain wiped out the first session, and Scott Boland survived 166 deliveries for 40 in an attempt to salvage a draw, but South Africa took the six wickets required to win as the light faded late on the last day.

Some of South Africa's notable Test victories over Australia include the last World Test Championship final two years ago and a Test on this ground in 2018 during the Sandpaper series.

The third Test begins on Tuesday in Cape Town and will decide the series.
