South Korea to host India on hard courts in Davis Cup Qualifiers Round 2

South Korea will host India at the Olympic Tennis Centre in Seoul on September 18-19, with the tie to be played on hard courts in the Davis Cup Qualifiers Round 2. The appointment of Seoul as host sets up what organisers described as a potentially intriguing contest between two closely matched teams.

India enter the tie ranked 19th in the Davis Cup standings while Korea sit 16th, and the Koreans hold a 6-5 edge in their head-to-head meetings. The sides last met in 2016 in Chandigarh in an Asia/Oceania Group I tie played on grass; India had chosen the grass surface then because Korean players are traditionally more at ease on hard courts.

India secured their place in this second-round tie with a 3-2 victory over the Netherlands in Bengaluru in February. Dhakshineswar Suresh won both his singles rubbers and also partnered Yuki Bhambri to victory in the doubles. Suresh clinched the meeting by defeating Guy den Ouden 6-4, 7-6(4) in the decisive fifth rubber, and that result took India into the second round of the qualifiers for the first time since the current format began in 2019.

Korea reached this stage after a 3-2 win over Argentina in Busan, an upset against the 2016 champions. Their comeback was driven in part by Kwon Soonwoo, who was still completing his military service at the time. Korea fought back in the tie to eliminate the higher-profile South American side.

The September encounter is a winner-takes-all tie for progression to the Davis Cup Final 8; the victorious nation will advance to the Final 8 in November. Korea have previously reached the 16-team Davis Cup Finals in 2022 and 2023.

India are scheduled to announce their squad for the Seoul tie on August 10, ahead of the September 18-19 matches.
