Sreejesh: India capable of top-four finish at World Cup, medals would be a bonus

Former goalkeeper PR Sreejesh said in an interview with JioHotstar on August 12, 2026 that the Indian men's team can finish in the top four at the upcoming FIH Hockey World Cup, and added that winning a medal would be a bonus.

India are the reigning Asia Cup champions and last won the World Cup in 1975; they have not reached the semi-finals since that title, a 51-year gap the side will be aiming to end at the tournament.

Sreejesh, who experienced difficult home World Cup campaigns in 2018 and 2022, noted he has also witnessed strong moments for India in recent years; the country won back-to-back Olympic bronze medals in Tokyo and Paris, achievements he referenced when discussing the squad's form.

On targets for the World Cup, Sreejesh said: "In my opinion, the way this team is set up and the progress we have made, a top four finish is the minimum we should aim for. Looking at the pool we have been drawn in, we have the quality and the depth to achieve that."

He added perspective on outcomes beyond a semi-final berth, stating: "Anything beyond that, silver, gold, or bronze, would be a bonus. The team is playing with confidence, and we have the experience to handle big games. We should not settle for less. The target is clear, we are here to compete and make our mark," said Sreejesh.

Addressing how the squad should manage the spotlight at a global event, Sreejesh warned about the effects of pressure and urged focus: "The FIH Hockey World Cup is the second biggest tournament in hockey after the Olympics and naturally, the whole world is watching, and all eyes are on you. That brings a lot of pressure. But you cannot let that pressure affect your game. When you start thinking too much about it, your performance drops."

He concluded with direct advice to the players: "And when your performance drops, the pressure increases even more. So the key is to stay calm, focus on your role, and trust your training. Most importantly, you are playing in the World Cup. This is what you have worked for. Just enjoy the moment and give your best on the pitch," said Sreejesh.

India will begin their World Cup campaign on August 15 against Wales.
