Sri Lanka are considering preparing a balanced pitch at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo for the second Test against India, which starts on August 23, after the first Test — won by India by 165 runs — ran its full five-day course on a benign surface.

The temptation to produce a dustbowl to exploit Indian batters' discomfort against spin is being weighed against the risk of it backfiring, and Sri Lanka Cricket officials are leaning toward a track similar to the one used at Galle. "At this moment, the thinking is for a well-balanced pitch like the one you saw at Galle. Sri Lanka are also without some experienced players like Chandi (Dinesh Chandimal), Kusal (Mendis) and (Pathum) Nissanka. So, we need to give our young batters a chance also," a SLC official told PTI. "Of course, it all depends on what finally the team wants for the match, you know, something that gives them the best chance to win and draw the series," he added.

Historically the SSC produced batting-friendly conditions in the aughts, when players such as Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene compiled large totals while Muttiah Muralitharan spearheaded a potent spin attack. Between 1999 and 2009 Sri Lanka played 12 Tests at the venue, winning six and drawing the rest.

The ground's character altered after those players retired; in the following decade Sri Lanka won three of seven Tests at the SSC and lost the other four. During that period they twice conceded a first-innings lead in excess of 400 to India and Pakistan.

Sri Lanka's wins at the SSC since the legends' era have come against South Africa (2018), Australia (2016) and Bangladesh (2025). Conversely, India (twice), England and Pakistan recorded comfortable results at the venue in the post-legends period.

A similar pattern could emerge in the second Test, with the match context suggesting the team batting first might hold the advantage, and the final surface choice will be confirmed ahead of the start on August 23.
