Sri Lanka pull off second-highest ODI chase, overhaul 430 to beat England in Rawalpindi

Sri Lanka chased down 430 to defeat England by two wickets in the third match of the tri-series in Pakistan at Rawalpindi on 22 October 2026. The victory was sealed when Janith Liyanage struck a maximum off the penultimate ball.
The successful chase recorded the second-highest run chase in ODI history, surpassing India's win in Guwahati last month against the West Indies. England captain's 202 went in vain. Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis said he felt he had made a mistake by allowing England to bat first, and heavy dew later aided the chasing side.
Sri Lanka slipped to 24 for two in 4.2 overs while pursuing the target before Pavan Rathnayake rebuilt the innings. Rathnayake scored 130 off 106 balls, compiling 15 boundaries and three sixes. He also put together a 166-run partnership with Avishka Fernando, who finished on 97 off 83 balls.
Dasun Shanaka provided a late surge with a 97 off 50 balls, an innings that included six fours and eight sixes. Rathnayake and Shanaka together drove the chase as England's bowlers struggled to contain their scoring in Rawalpindi. The pair pushed Sri Lanka into contention after the early collapse.
The finish produced late drama when Josh Tongue took back-to-back wickets, removing Dunith Wellalage and Eshan Malinga in the final over. Janith Liyanage remained unbeaten on 61 off 27 balls, hitting seven fours and three sixes as he completed the target. His late assault left Brook and England stunned at the end.
Earlier in the match Harry Brook produced the fastest double hundred in ODI history, going past the record set by Shubman Gill last month. Despite that landmark innings, England’s 202 did not prevent Sri Lanka from completing the chase.
The outcome has been described as one of the greatest wins in ODI history.
