Stephen Fleming appointed England men’s Test coach as Joe Root returns as captain

Stephen Fleming has been confirmed as the new coach of the England men’s Test team, with Joe Root returning for a second spell as captain. Marcus Trescothick will take interim charge for the three-game series against Pakistan, which starts at Headingley in three weeks, while Fleming is set to arrive later this summer and take over for the winter trip to South Africa.

The England and Wales Cricket Board described the appointment as the result of “a rigorous process, which involved numerous high-quality candidates”. Rob Key, the managing director of men’s cricket, who led the recruitment process, said England were “very fortunate that someone of his calibre is willing to take on the challenge”, adding: “I believe he is the best person to guide a team stacked full of potential and turn that talent into a world-class outfit that can not only achieve success but sustain it.”

Fleming, a New Zealander, will not be in charge for the immediate home Tests against Pakistan; instead Marcus Trescothick has been named interim coach for that three-game series, which is scheduled to begin at Headingley in three weeks. The temporary arrangement covers the short-term gap while Fleming prepares to relocate and integrate into the England structure.

According to the ECB timeline, Fleming is due to arrive in the country “later this summer” and will assume full responsibility for the Test side ahead of the tour to South Africa this winter. Officials described the recruitment as exhaustive, and Fleming emerged as a unanimous selection from the field of candidates considered.

Joe Root’s return as captain marks a second stint leading the Test side, a change timed to coincide with Fleming taking over the long-term coaching role. Trescothick’s interim appointment is limited to the Pakistan fixtures, providing continuity and a familiar presence while Fleming completes his relocation and onboarding.

Rob Key, who led the recruitment process, framed Fleming as the figure best placed to harness England’s available talent and build sustained success, emphasising the board’s belief in his suitability for the role.
