Mark Stewart and Anna Morris won gold medals for Great Britain at the Track Cycling World Championships in Shanghai on Friday, with Stewart victorious in the men's points race and Morris crowned women's omnium champion.

Scot Stewart, 31, produced a strong finish in the closing stages of the men's points race to take the title by seven points ahead of Olympic omnium champion Benjamin Thomas, with Portugal's Carlos Salgueiro claiming bronze. European omnium title-holder Anna Morris, also 31 and representing Wales, led the overall standings after three rounds and sealed the world title by winning the final points race, beating Japan's Tsuyaka Uchino and Denmark's Amalie Dideriksen; Morris had won women's team pursuit gold on Thursday.

Stewart, who was fourth in the points race at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer, said he was "speechless" to finally claim a world title and thanked British Cycling and his wife and family for their support. "It's a selfish pursuit being an athlete; you kind of lose yourselves in it sometimes," he told BBC Sport. "People need to understand you're a young person with an immense amount of pressure, and it takes years to learn those lessons sometimes. "Over the last 10 years, the culture change at British Cycling, for the better, has been amazing."

Defending champion Lorena Wiebes of the Netherlands crashed out of the omnium in the opening scratch race, bringing down multiple riders as she hit the ground.

Elsewhere on Friday, Emma Finucane took silver in the women's sprint final as 21-year-old Yuan Liying of China secured a straight-ride victory to win the title in front of a home crowd, Sophie Capewell lost a photo-finish battle for bronze in the same event to Japan's Mina Sato, and Joseph Truman won bronze in the men's time trial final.

Alongside Stewart and Morris's victories, Great Britain also collected podiums on Friday with Finucane's silver and Truman's bronze contributing to the nation's medal return at the championships.
