Stokes 66* and 5-17 as Durham crush Derbyshire by 338 runs in Division Two

Ben Stokes scored an unbeaten 66 and took 5-17 as Durham defeated Derbyshire by 338 runs inside three days at The OurCoop County Ground, Derby in the Rothesay County Championship Division Two on day three. Durham won by 338 runs, earning 20 points to Derbyshire’s 3.
Durham posted 283 in their first innings and declared on 295-6 in the second; Derbyshire were dismissed for 156 and 84. Ben McKinney made 140 from 162 balls, hitting 15 fours and six sixes, and Will Rhodes contributed 52 in a second-wicket stand of 157. Shoaib Bashir took 3-77 in Durham’s second innings before the declaration, leaving Derbyshire a notional 423 to win.
McKinney, aged 21, scored what the report described as an innings of the highest class and a second Championship century of the summer, combining poise with calculated aggression during his 140. His partnership with Rhodes took Durham’s lead toward 300 after the loss of skipper Alex Lees to the first ball of the innings. McKinney twice drove Bashir for six as he expanded his scoring before finally holing out to long off.
Stokes provided a brisk finishing contribution with the bat, an unbeaten 66 from 55 balls, and the report notes he reached his half-century off 38 balls. He launched a Matthew Montgomery delivery onto the roof of the Media Centre during that cameo, then Durham declared at 295-6.
Derbyshire’s first innings ended at 156 with England paceman Matthew Potts taking 5-46. Potts then returned in the second innings to claim 3-22 and, according to the report, became the leading wicket-taker in the Championship. The report also references Potts’ earlier 8-68 against Derbyshire in June as the second time this season he has taken five wickets in an innings against them.
Durham’s morning assault on Derbyshire’s lower order was driven by Potts’ full and accurate bowling, with Ben Aitchison lbw and Anuj Dal bowled as Potts removed key wickets. Brydon Carse dismissed Nick Potts and Bashir lost his middle stump in the same passage of play, accelerating Derbyshire’s collapse.
Stokes then produced a decisive late spell with the ball, taking three wickets in four balls: Brooke Guest top-edged a pull, Anuj Dal was adjudged lbw, and after Aitchison survived a hat-trick ball only to edge to first slip, a Stokes bouncer felled Brett Randell, who subsequently retired following a second concussion check. Stokes finished with 5-17 as Derbyshire were all out for 84, suffering the heaviest margin of defeat by runs in their history.
The victory moves Durham a step closer to a return to Division One, sealing a comprehensive win that leaves Derbyshire with 3 points and Durham with 20 in the match points column.
