Stokes ends turbulent summer with Durham title and signs for Adelaide Strikers

Ben Stokes finished a tumultuous summer by helping Durham secure the County Championship Division Two title in 2026 and will not hold a central contract with the England and Wales Cricket Board for the first time since 2014. The 35-year-old announced during a Test decider against New Zealand that he was stepping down from the England captaincy and withdrawing from international cricket.

Off the field, Durham must plan how Stokes will be managed next summer, a task that falls early to Ryan Campbell as he moves into the director of cricket role after four seasons as head coach. Campbell said: "Yes, I do, I honestly do," when asked about Stokes continuing to play county cricket. "His love of the game, he talks about his bowling run-up and stuff that he can adapt to county cricket so he can bowl more. The playing, the batting, where he wants to bat, this sort of stuff, he's all-in I would have thought for the next couple of years at least."

Stokes has committed to a stint in franchise T20s, signing to play in the Big Bash for Adelaide Strikers and making his debut in that competition, but the route to other leagues carries complications. "It's going to be a big test for him as he hasn't played T20 cricket for ages - trying to get back into the rhythm of white-ball bowling and batting. "I hear Adelaide are going to open the batting with him. That's brilliant. That's where he belongs in T20 cricket. Where does he bowl? How are they going to use him? I'm intrigued to see that sort of stuff."

Stokes will head to Australia for the festive period to join Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash, scheduled in the article as running from 12 December 2026 to 26 January 2027, with the SA T20 listed from 17 January to 21 February, the IPL from 14 March to 30 May, the PSL in April–May and Major League Cricket in mid-June to mid-July.
