Sunderland sign Tottenham defender Kevin Danso on season-long loan

Sunderland completed the loan signing of Tottenham defender Kevin Danso until the end of the season on 1 September 2026, the club announced.

The move carries an initial cost of £2.5m and includes a clause to make the transfer permanent next summer for £22.5m if Regis Le Bris' side stay in the Premier League. "I'm really happy to be here and I can't wait to get started," said Danso. "Sunderland is a big club with huge ambition, and I'm excited to be part of what we're building this season." The 27-year-old made 52 appearances for Spurs after signing from RC Lens in January 2025 and helped Tottenham win the Europa League in 2025.

Danso's departure from Tottenham coincides with the club pursuing defensive reinforcements, with Spurs closing in on a move for Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo. Tottenham had a bid accepted for Adarabioyo on Monday night, according to the club's reported transfer activity.

Adarabioyo, 28, progressed through Manchester City’s academy before joining Fulham on a permanent deal in 2020 and then moved to Chelsea in 2024 following the expiry of his contract with Fulham. Since his arrival at Stamford Bridge he has made more than 70 appearances for Chelsea across all competitions and has won the Conference League and the Club World Cup.

Tottenham are also reported to be close to finalising a deal for Chelsea attacker Mykhailo Mudryk before Tuesday night's transfer deadline. In separate business, Palace and Sunderland are reported to be competing for a £30m move for Fofana.

The addition of Danso strengthens Sunderland's defensive options ahead of the club's first European campaign since 1973.
