Sunrisers move to second with 45-run win over Phoenix at Edgbaston
Sunrisers Leeds beat Birmingham Phoenix by 45 runs at Edgbaston in The Hundred men's competition on 7 August 2026, moving into second place and eliminating Phoenix from contention.
Sunrisers posted 169-7 from their 100 balls, helped by Ryan Rickelton's 65 off 37 deliveries, while Birmingham were restricted to 124-8. Brydon Carse took 3-17 and Matthew Potts claimed 3-22 as the visitors fell well short in the chase.
Rickelton struck six fours and three sixes during his innings and put on an opening stand of 52 with Mitch Marsh after Sunrisers were put into bat; he then added 42 with Harry Brook. Rickelton was run out from the 93rd ball of the innings, the third of four wickets to fall for 15 runs towards the close.
Off-spinner Usman Tariq finished with 2-28 for Phoenix, bowling the tournament's leading run-scorer Marsh for 34 and trapping Brook lbw for 19. Will Smeed was also dismissed for 9 during the middle phase of the innings.
Carse struck twice in the Phoenix powerplay, removing Mitch Owen for 10 and Rehan Ahmed for 0, both caught. Rehan Ahmed's wicket came four balls after Smeed's dismissal, which was a catch by Rickelton off Potts.
Birmingham quickly fell behind the required run-rate and lost wickets at intervals; Donovan Ferreira was bowled for three to become Carse's third victim. Sean Dickson top-scored with 34 before slicing a Nathan Ellis delivery to Brook in the deep, and Potts wrapped up the contest by bowling Scott Currie (5) and Tom Helm (0) with successive deliveries.
Sunrisers moved up from fifth to second, overtaking MI London and Welsh Fire on net run-rate, with Manchester Super Giants four points behind the trio. Phoenix remain bottom with one win and five losses, joining London Spirit in elimination after every team has played six games.
The Hundred continues with a double-header on Saturday: MI London host Trent Rockets and Southern Brave welcome Manchester Super Giants, with women's and men's fixtures at The Oval starting at 11:00 and 14:30 BST respectively and at the Utilita Bowl the women's tie at 14:30 and the men's at 18:00.
