Suryakumar Yadav to play President’s Cup after losing India captaincy and Mumbai Ranji spot

Suryakumar Yadav has decided to play in the President’s Cup, a local tournament starting on Sunday, the Indian Express reported. The 36-year-old was stripped of India’s T20 captaincy earlier this year and has been omitted from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad this month.
At the start of 2026 Yadav was leading India in T20Is and was part of the playing XI; he also helped the Men in Blue win their third ICC T20 World Cup title in March. In that tournament he played nine games, scored 242 runs at an average of 30 with a best of 84 and finished as the third-highest scorer for India. He was removed as T20 captain in June and Shreyas Iyer was named the new captain after Yadav’s prolonged batting slump was cited as the reason for his dismissal.
Yadav had a lacklustre Indian Premier League 2026 campaign, scoring 270 runs in 13 matches. The source notes he has previously been regarded as one of the most consistent and prolific T20 batters, and that performances below his usual standard were viewed critically.
Earlier this month Yadav lost his place in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy side and was left out of the squad for the opening round of the 2026–27 domestic season. Mumbai senior men’s chief selector Rajesh Pawar said Yadav was not selected because he had not been active in red-ball cricket for the last 18 months, and Yadav’s last first-class appearance came in February 2025.
Siddhesh Lad has been named Mumbai’s new Ranji captain and Ayush Mhatre will serve as his deputy. Despite his recent omissions from international and domestic sides, Yadav is set to appear in the President’s Cup as he seeks to regain form.
According to the Indian Express, Yadav’s showing in the President’s Cup could influence future selections; he could also be considered for Mumbai’s 50-over (Vijay Hazare Trophy) and T20 (Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy) squads depending on his availability and form.
