Suthar says quick adaptation to different balls and conditions is crucial

JAIPUR, October 12, 2026: Manav Suthar said on Monday that adapting quickly to different balls and conditions was crucial as he prepares for the India-A Tour of New Zealand.
In a short span, Suthar has appeared in three separate matches using three different balls and conditions: he made his Test debut against Afghanistan at Mullanpur in June with the SG ball, took five or more wickets against Sri Lanka at Galle in August with the Kookaburra, and starred for Warwickshire against Essex in a County Championship Division One match at Chelmsford in September with the Dukes ball. The 24-year-old's recent outings covered a range of surfaces and climates.
On his routine for switching between balls, Suthar said: "To adjust, I practise a little more with whichever ball is going to be used in the match. That is what I try to do," he said.
He described the wider adjustments he makes beyond the ball itself, saying: "I try to adapt not just the ball, but the conditions too. How the wicket is going to play, what the weather is like, how the wind is blowing, how much drift to expect - I try to see how quickly I can adapt to all of that."
Noting New Zealand's conditions, the article states it is especially windy there and that Suthar has been studying footage to better understand those conditions as part of his preparation for the India-A Tour of New Zealand. When asked whether he was studying the lengths to bowl, the pace through the air, or how the ball behaved off the surface, he said he was looking at "everything."
On the benefit of prior experience with a particular ball, Suthar said: "Absolutely. If you have already played with a particular ball, it takes you a little less time to adjust. That will definitely help," referring to his time bowling with the Kookaburra in Sri Lanka and how it could ease adaptation in New Zealand.
Suthar is continuing his preparations ahead of the India-A Tour of New Zealand.
