Switzerland beat 10‑man Scotland 3-0 in Pocognoli’s first home game; full player ratings

Scotland were beaten 3-0 by Switzerland in their second Nations League match, in Sebastian Pocognoli's first home game in charge, with Jack Hendry sent off in the 11th minute as the visitors ran out comfortable winners.

Switzerland took control after the early sending-off and converted three opportunities into goals: Ricardo Rodriguez struck the opener from a powerful free-kick, a Dan Ndoye cross led to Nico Elvedi's goal, and Zeki Amdouni finished with another powerful effort. The defeat left Scotland unable to recover after being reduced to 10 men so early in the contest.

Angus Gunn was beaten at his near post by Rodriguez’s free-kick for the opening goal and later by the power of Amdouni’s finish; he also made two notable saves either side of half-time to deny Ndoye. Rating: 4.

Jack Hendry was exposed for pace by Dan Ndoye and brought the striker down, receiving a red card in the 11th minute that left Scotland a man short. Rating: 2. Luis Binks, the Brondby defender, was guilty of a rash late tackle early on, was slow to close down Ndoye and failed to stop the cross that led to Elvedi’s strike, but otherwise did not look out of place. Rating: 5. Scott McKenna dealt with most of what came his way as most Swiss threats came from wide areas. Rating: 6. Nathan Patterson struggled defensively against the pacy Ndoye and made little impact going forward. Rating: 5.

Andy Robertson maintained his usual work up and down the left but could not produce a reward on his 99th Scotland appearance. Rating: 6. Lewis Ferguson made a few timely interventions around his own penalty area but had little of the ball as Switzerland’s midfield took control. Rating: 5. Billy Gilmour was the most likely to spark Scotland in the early stages but faded and was substituted before the hour mark. Rating: 5. John McGinn found it difficult to influence the game and did not reach the positions where he can affect play. Rating: 5.

Kieron Bowie was replaced early by Stephen Welsh following Hendry’s dismissal. Rating: 5. Oli McBurnie, operating as the lone striker after Bowie's exit, "battled impressively" and caused problems for the Swiss defence. Rating: 7. Stephen Welsh was brought on to shore up the defence and helped steady the team before Switzerland doubled their lead. Rating: 6. Ryan Christie had around 30 minutes after coming on but made little impression. Rating: 5.

Ben Gannon-Doak spent most of his time tracking back toward his own goal. Rating: 5. Robbie Ure received no service to work with. Rating: 5.
