Tanzid Hasan Tamim hits Bangladesh's first Test century in Australia

Tanzid Hasan Tamim became the first Bangladesh cricketer to score a Test century in Australia on day two of the first Test in Darwin. He made 101 off 197 balls as Bangladesh closed the day 351-6, a lead of 153.

The 25-year-old opener, who made his Test debut against Pakistan in May, was playing in only his second Test match. He began the day on 32 with Bangladesh 96-1 after Australia were bowled out for 198 on day one when the hosts won the toss. Play took place at the Marrara Oval in stiflingly hot conditions.

Tanzid put on 102 for the second wicket with Mominul Haque; Mominul was dismissed by Josh Hazlewood for 49 before lunch. He then added 93 with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, who finished on 84. "I can't describe it in words, but it was very special for me," he said. "I love to play in these conditions, the pitch is getting better and better."

His innings ended when he drove a Nathan Lyon delivery to Mitchell Starc at long-off during the afternoon session. After tea Australia rallied with three quick wickets with the new ball. Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Hasan Mahmud then put on an unbeaten 43 before stumps to help Bangladesh remain ahead.

Australia have never lost a home Test to Bangladesh, only losing once to the Tigers in six previous Tests - at Mirpur in 2017. This match is the first of a two-Test series.
