Tanzid Hasan Tamim posts first Test century by a Bangladesh batter in Australia
Tanzid Hasan Tamim became the first Bangladesh batter to score a Test century in Australia on August 14, 2026, reaching the landmark during the first Test against Australia in Darwin. He completed a 188-ball hundred as Bangladesh moved ahead of Australia's first-innings total.
The 25-year-old left-hander produced the innings in only his second Test, initially building his score patiently before accelerating later in the stay at the crease. He found support from captain Najmul Hossain Shanto as the pair worked to extend Bangladesh's advantage following a dominant opening day. The knock also followed a strong performance from Bangladesh's bowlers earlier in the match.
Hasan Mahmud led the bowling effort, taking 6/55 to help dismiss Australia for 198 and give the visitors an excellent position in the Test. That bowling performance set the platform for Bangladesh's batting response on the second day.
Tanzid and Mominul Haque combined for a 102-run partnership for the second wicket before Mominul was out for 49, caught behind off Josh Hazlewood. After Mominul's dismissal, Najmul Hossain Shanto joined Tanzid at the crease and continued to provide valuable support at the other end.
Tanzid's century moved him past Hannan Sarkar's previous Bangladesh record for the highest individual Test score in Australia — Sarkar's 76 at Cairns in 2003. The innings came against an Australian attack that included Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon.
The century added to an already eventful Test for Bangladesh and has placed the visitors firmly in control of a match in which they began as the underdogs.
