Three British boxers lose finals, take silver at European Championships

Three Great Britain finalists lost their bouts at the European Boxing Championships on 25 September 2026, each settling for a silver medal. Those three silvers were added to two bronze medals the team had won on Thursday.

The two bronzes were earned by Callum Makin and Dimeji Shittu on Thursday. Irish boxer Lisa O'Rourke won gold in the women's 80kg final that same day. British Boxing had fielded a full team across the event.

Chantelle Reid, a Commonwealth Games silver medallist, was beaten 5-0 by Turkey's Busenaz Surmeneli in the light-middleweight final. Reid said: "I'm happy to come away with a silver, obviously would've preferred a gold but I shared the ring with a really good opponent. I feel like I performed the best I could but I'm looking forward to fighting her again. It's been an amazing tournament, four really good fights and getting these medals at major competitions, I'm really grateful."

Abdul Burton, 20, also lost 5-0, falling to Russia's Viacheslav Rogozin in the men's super-bantamweight final. Burton, emotional in his post-fight interview, said: "It's not the gold I aimed for, but silver in my first major, I'm still happy. I'll learn from it and come back. Five fights out here against top kids, it's been a great experience. To step up to seniors from the under-23s, I'm happy, it's never nice to lose but I will move on."

Damar Thomas, the 21-year-old Commonwealth gold-medal winner, was defeated 3-2 by Russia's David Surov in the men's super-heavyweight final in what was described as a close contest. That result completed the trio of British silver medallists on the final day.

Great Britain sent 15 boxers to the European Boxing Championships and finished the event with five medals and no gold.
