Tielemans 26-minute cameo in Gothenburg offers glimpse of Manchester United role
Youri Tielemans made his Manchester United debut as a second-half substitute in the club's 1-1 draw with Paris St-Germain in Gothenburg and has joined United on a deal running until June 2031.
His appearance lasted 26 minutes after he and Bruno Fernandes were introduced in the second half, with Tielemans' brief combinations with Fernandes drawing praise from senior figures at the club. Mason Mount had to be substituted after 20 minutes and head coach Michael Carrick told Norwegian broadcaster VG post-match that Mount had come off as a precaution after taking a hefty blow to his foot; Mount walked freely past reporters to the team bus an hour after the final whistle. United signed Tielemans by triggering a previously unknown £35m clause in his Aston Villa contract to agree a five-year deal.
During his cameo, Tielemans completed several long-range diagonal passes, including a couple of 45-yard cross-field deliveries that found their intended targets. He played simple first-time lay-offs to team-mates inside 10 yards and sprinted from just outside the United area to close down Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, winning the ball and playing a simple pass to remove the immediate danger. Those specific actions were noted alongside his short combinations with Fernandes rather than any standout individual moments.
The connections between Tielemans and Bruno Fernandes were cited by United staff as the most encouraging element of the cameo because those little passes helped the team ease out of pressure and progress up the pitch. Fernandes was described in the report as United's key man last season as the club finished third; his contribution of nine goals and 21 assists was called a decisive factor in returning the club to the Champions League after a two-year absence.
Director of football Jason Wilcox was quoted on Tielemans' signing, saying: "Youri has consistently been one of the most outstanding midfielders in the Premier League throughout the past seven years," and adding, "He will add further composure, creativity and leadership to our squad." Wilcox also said: "He has all of the technical qualities, as well as the ambition and mentality, to thrive at Manchester United."
Carrick confirmed Marcus Rashford will rejoin the Manchester United squad for their trip to the Republic of Ireland, with Rashford, England team-mate Kobbie Mainoo and Argentina defender Lisandro Martinez listed as the final three players to return to United after the World Cup. The report states that when Rashford joined Barcelona on loan in July 2025 it was not expected he would return to United, but the La Liga champions failed to trigger a £26m option to buy the 28-year-old at the end of the season and, despite interest elsewhere, there has been no deal; the piece says this means Rashford will return to United for the first time since January 2025, when he moved to Aston Villa after falling out with former manager Ruben Amorim.
United are training at the Carton House hotel in Maynooth for a week-long camp and have a friendly with Leeds United at Croke Park on 12 August before completing their pre-season programme against Amorim's new club AC Milan in Wroclaw on 15 August, when Rashford could make his first United appearance since December 2024 if Carrick decides Wednesday is too soon. Carrick, describing his relationship with Rashford, said: "I've played with him. I played in the game he made his debut, so we have a history," and added: "We have got a full squad this week in Dublin. We fly straight there and have a few days where we have the whole group back together. Marcus is part of that, and Kobbie [Mainoo] and Lisandro [Martinez]. We look forward to seeing them."
United will travel to the Republic of Ireland for the Maynooth training camp and face Leeds at Croke Park on 12 August and AC Milan in Wroclaw on 15 August as they conclude their pre-season preparations.
