Timber strike and Saka cameo lift Arsenal to 3-0 Champions League win over Lille

Arsenal beat Lille 3-0 at the Emirates in a Champions League match on 13 October 2026 as Jurriën Timber, Eberechi Eze and substitute Bukayo Saka scored, and Olivier Giroud received a standing ovation on his return to north London.
The club marked the death of life president Ken Friar with black armbands and tributes before the game; Mikel Arteta paid public tribute, saying: “I’m sure he is very happy to see how the boys played. But not only that, because I know how proud he felt about what we built,” said Arteta of Friar. “It’s a really sad day for everyone who loves football. The legacy that Ken is going to leave for this club is going to be for ever.” The win extended Arsenal’s sequence to twelve consecutive victories and their tally of goals at the Emirates in league or group-stage European matches under Arteta to 36, while they have conceded only three times across those 12 wins.
Arsenal laboured for long spells in a first half largely contained by a deep Lille defence, with Noni Madueke the home side’s most dangerous outlet. Bruno Guimarães and Mikel Merino both missed opportunities, and an Ayase Ueda strike that followed a Nabil Bentaleb effort was ruled out after video review for a marginal offside against the Japan striker following a deflection off Timber and Hákon Haraldsson. Viktor Gyökeres worked hard but offered limited creativity; on one occasion Eberechi Eze forced Berke Ozer into his first significant save and Gyökeres was subsequently flagged offside.
Early in the second half referee Felix Zwayer dismissed penalty appeals when Bruno Guimarães went down under pressure from Alexsandro. A near-identical Madueke effort that nearly reached the upper tier prompted Arteta to call Martin Ødegaard, Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz to prepare as substitutes. Before those players had been introduced, Madueke’s cross found Jurriën Timber, who applied a deft finish with his right foot after a brilliant first touch to open the scoring in the 64th minute.
Saka, once introduced, had an immediate effect: he set up Eze to convert the second with his left foot less than three minutes after Timber’s strike, the goal possibly aided by a deflection. Later in the same seven-minute spell the substitute completed the scoring after linking with Havertz and Ødegaard to make it 3-0 and settle the outcome.
Arteta made five changes to his lineup despite missing Piero Hincapié and Martín Zubimendi, both of whom were injured during the warm-down after Saturday’s victory over Leeds. Lille’s manager Davide Ancelotti, who worked under his father Carlo at Everton and Real Madrid and was appointed during the summer in only his second senior role, chose not to start the returning Giroud against his former club.
A wayward long-range effort from Madueke in the second half triggered the substitution decisions that reshaped the match, and a late cameo from Max Dowman provided the final touch to another comfortable evening for the home side.
The result also extended Arsenal’s run in the competition to 14 successive league-stage victories, three short of Bayern Munich’s record.
