London Spirit launched their reworked Hundred era at Lord’s but both the men’s and women’s sides fell to Manchester Super Giants. The men were beaten by seven runs in a chase of 139, despite a near-heroic effort from Liam Livingstone.
The Hundred presented an entertaining evening at Lord’s as the Spirit unveiled a squad under new ownership and fresh coaching appointments. Despite the changes, the club’s results were unchanged: for the fifth time in their six-year history the men started their season with defeat. The opening weekend saw both the men’s and women’s teams lose to Manchester Super Giants, marking a disappointing start at the home ground.
On the men’s side Liam Livingstone took on a heavy workload with the ball, delivering 20 of the last 25 balls of Manchester Super Giants’ innings and finishing with two wickets for just 14. He assumed what had become the most demanding portion of the bowling assignment and produced economical returns to restrict the visitors. Manchester’s total set the Spirit a target of 139, a chase that proved just out of reach.
Livingstone then led the fight with the bat, compiling 69 off 40 deliveries to keep London in contention deep into the chase. His innings kept the contest alive until a pivotal moment late in the pursuit when he swung at the antepenultimate delivery and was bowled by Sonny Baker. That dismissal removed the central figure in the Spirit recovery and shifted momentum back to the Super Giants.
The match finished with the Spirit falling short by seven runs, a narrow margin in a condensed Hundred contest and one that reflected how close the captain’s all-round display came to altering the result. The home dressing room will note both the resistance offered and the fine margins that decided the game at Lord’s. Throughout the evening the Hundred’s spectacle continued to draw attention, even as the Spirit could not convert the occasion into victories.
The women’s team also failed to overcome Manchester Super Giants in their fixture, completing the double defeat for the franchise at Lord’s on the opening weekend. Both teams left the ground defeated after the Hundred fixtures.
