TNCA to name three stands at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium after Venkataraghavan, Srikkanth and Ashwin

At its annual general meeting on Sunday, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association decided to name three stands at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai after former players S. Venkataraghavan, K. Srikkanth and R. Ashwin.

The M.A. Chidambaram Stadium is set to host the opening match of the Big Bash League. That fixture will pit the Perth Scorchers against the Melbourne Renegades. It is scheduled for December 12. S. Venkataraghavan played 57 Tests for India. He led the side in the first two ODI World Cups, in 1975 and 1979. He went on to become a renowned umpire.

K. Srikkanth was an architect of India’s two ODI World Cup triumphs, first as a player in 1983. He later served as the chairman of the selection committee that picked the victorious squad in 2011. The TNCA’s decision will attach his name to one of the stadium stands.

R. Ashwin is India’s second-highest Test wicket-taker with 537 scalps. The 40-year-old is the only player from the State to have turned out in more than 100 Tests (106). He was part of India’s 2011 World Cup-winning squad.

The unveiling of the newly named stands is likely to take place before the Big Bash League opening fixture between the Perth Scorchers and the Melbourne Renegades on December 12.
