On Wednesday night Southampton manager Tonda Eckert was handed a suspended six-week ban and fined £28,000 after an independent disciplinary process into the club’s spying scheme linked to footage gathered ahead of a Championship play-off semi-final.

The investigation began when Middlesbrough staff, two days before the first leg of that semi-final, reported someone lurking on the perimeter of their training ground and the EFL confirmed “an individual associated with Southampton” was involved. Southampton won the tie and advanced to the final, but were later expelled from the play-offs and docked four points for the following season; Middlesbrough went to Wembley and Hull City threatened legal action.

The independent disciplinary commission described the operation as “a contrived and determined plan from the top down” and said footage was captured of three opponents: Ipswich, Oxford and Boro. Reports noted Southampton failed to win any of the matches that were filmed and that Eckert had “loved it” when shown the footage.

Eckert told investigators he accepted “full responsibility” and, according to the report, posed the questions “Was that wrong? Should I not have done that?” during his defence. The panel also recorded his status as a relatively new figure in English football while assessing his testimony.

The FA’s lawyers had initially sought a nine-month suspension, which was later reduced to three months during proceedings, but the independent panel judged Eckert a “particularly impressive witness” who showed “genuine contrition”. The final sanction was the suspended six-week ban together with the £28,000 fine.

Owner Dragan Solak told supporters he would seek to “close the chapter and look ahead together”, pending final sanctions. Despite the points deduction from the earlier ruling, the club already sit in mid-table.

So long as he can avoid concocting a similar scheme in future, Eckert will serve no ban at all; he will be in the dugout for Sunday’s derby against Portsmouth.
