Top five Indian athletes with the biggest Asian Games medal hauls

The Asian Games present India’s strongest continental competition, where medals are described as significant and hard-earned. A small group of Indian competitors have accumulated multiple podium finishes across editions, setting benchmarks through sustained performances. These athletes hold several records and are regarded among India’s most successful representatives at the Games.

Parduman Singh Brar was an early Indian athletics pioneer at the Asian Games, winning two golds at the 1954 Manila Games in the men’s shot put and discus throw. At the 1958 Tokyo Games he secured gold in the men’s shot put and bronze in the discus. He added a silver in the discus at the 1962 Jakarta Games, completing his Games medal sequence.

Jyothi Surekha began her Asian Games medal run with a bronze in the women’s team compound event in 2014. She followed that with a silver in the women’s team compound at the 2018 Jakarta Palembang Games. At the Hangzhou Games she won three golds — in the individual, women’s team and mixed team compound events — and is expected to move up in this list with the upcoming Games campaign in Japan.

Jaspal Rana is noted in the source as India’s most decorated athlete in Commonwealth Games history, and at the Asian Games he ranks third among the country’s most successful competitors. He won his first Asian Games gold in the 25m centre-fire pistol at the 1994 Hiroshima Games. The other three gold medals came at the 2006 Doha Games in 25m events, and he has also collected two silver and two bronze medals in 25m events at the Asian Games.

Leander Paes accumulated eight medals across five Asian Games editions between 1990 and 2006. His victories include the Men’s Team gold in 1994; men’s doubles golds with Mahesh Bhupathi in 2002 and 2006 and with Gaurav Natekar in 1994; and the mixed doubles gold alongside Sania Mirza in 2006. The remaining three of his eight Asian Games medals were bronze.

P. T. Usha is listed as the most decorated Indian athlete in Asian Games history with 11 medals (4 Gold & 7 Silver). She first medalled at New Delhi in 1982 with silver in the 100m and 200m, won four gold and a silver in Seoul in 1986, collected three silver medals in the subsequent edition, and earned her final Games medal in 1994.
