Lisandro Martinez criticised Manchester United’s owners and technical director Jason Wilcox after United’s 2-0 defeat by Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League, in comments reported on 2026-10-14. The Argentine defender told Amazon he expected greater investment from the club following the loss and his remarks are one of six post-match interviews highlighted for their bluntness.

Martinez’s comments — including direct criticism of ownership and Jason Wilcox — anchor a list of similarly forthright post-match reactions by players. The compilation also cites incidents involving Austin, Roy Keane, Füllkrug, Mohamed Salah and Jude Bellingham, spanning refereeing disputes, internal club rifts, transfer-window grievances and national-team exchanges.

After the 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid Martinez said: “We did a fantastic season last season and now we expect more from the top, more players to compete because many teams bring many players as well. Atlético have an amazing team and they deserve to win today.” He added: “But I expect more (investment). 100%. I expect more from our technical director (Jason Wilcox). I have to be honest, as players we have to do more, but it is also important when you make a strong squad to be ready for this kind of night.” Martinez made those remarks to Amazon.

The article recalls a pre-VAR Premier League game between Southampton and Watford that finished 1-1, when Austin had a goal disallowed for offside and targeted match officials in his post-match remarks. “It’s ridiculous, they shouldn’t be in the game,” he said. “We scored a perfectly good goal that was ruled out for offside. The officials cost us two points. They said it was offside, that is a joke. People go on about VAR, they clearly need help. If this is the best, most-watched league in the world then give them all the help they need. It’s a joke.”

In October 2005 Roy Keane spoke on MUTV after Manchester United were thrashed 4-1 by Middlesbrough and used the internal broadcast to criticise several team-mates. He singled out players including Edwin van der Sar, John O’Shea, Rio Ferdinand, Darren Fletcher, Kieran Richardson and Alan Smith. Sir Alex Ferguson was enraged, forced the entire squad to watch the interview and, after Keane asked if anyone had any problems, a 19-year-old Wayne Rooney later said that Keane and Ferguson had been involved in a fight during which the manager leapt over his desk.

The piece cites Niclas Füllkrug’s post-match interview after West Ham’s draw with relegated Southampton in April 2025, noting his contribution was criticised and the signing described as “a terrible acquisition for West Ham United – possibly the worst in the team’s history.” Füllkrug said: “It is a mindset problem. Very angry today. Not disappointed, just angry with what we did after the goal. It was difficult to bring the boys back to push up, we didn’t push up anymore.” He added: “I am very, very angry that we played like this... But the motivation, sorry we were sh*t and I’m very angry.”

Mohamed Salah is cited for two media interventions: after scoring twice in a 3-2 win over Southampton in 2024 while vying for a new contract he said he was “probably more out than in.” A year later, after a downturn in form, he told the media: “It seems like the club has thrown me under the bus. That is how I am feeling. I think it is very clear that someone wanted me to get all of the blame.” The compilation also recalls a World Cup quarterfinal context in which Jude Bellingham replied to criticism attributed to England head coach Thomas Tuchel after a 2-1 victory over Norway, saying: “All the players have put in a tough shift. So my thoughts and appreciation go out to the players out there who put in a great shift again. Maybe he doesn’t know what it’s like to play in those kind of conditions against Erling Haaland, )Martin) Odegaard, (Antonio) Nusa, (Alexander) Sorloth. That’s not an easy team to play against. So, I think we’ve tried to create a positive environment. You’re not going to win every game, popping the ball and making a thousand passes. Sometimes you have to win dirty, and we’ve done that again tonight.”
