Tottenham beat Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge as Penders own goal and Tel strike decide Matchday 8

Chelsea hosted Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge in a Matchday 8 Premier League fixture on Saturday, October 24, 2026, as Spurs won 2-0 courtesy of an own goal by Mike Penders and a late Mathys Tel strike. The match was scoreless for the majority of the game before Tottenham’s opener in the 77th minute and Tel’s goal in the 87th minute sealed the victory.
Heavy rain disrupted play at Stamford Bridge, with downpour and waterlogging making passing difficult and leading to a subdued opening period. As Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville pointed out, the downpour caused waterlogging on the pitch, holding up the ball. Goalkeepers were called into action early, and the first-half expected goals (xG) read 0.24 for Chelsea and 0.43 for Tottenham at the break. Omar Marmoush produced Chelsea’s best first-half chance but was denied by Mike Penders.
Tottenham controlled possession in the opening half-hour, registering roughly three-fourths possession during that spell and forcing multiple shots on target. Chelsea recovered some control toward the end of the first half, during which Antonin Kinsky made three saves within two minutes. Despite the weather and those saves, clear-cut chances remained scarce until the second half.
The deadlock was broken in the 77th minute when a Mateus Fernandes corner led to an own goal by Mike Penders; the goalkeeper came out to punch the ball, which struck his fist and went into his own net while under very little pressure from Jean Paul van Hecke. Penders had become the youngest goalkeeper to start a Premier League match for Chelsea after Emiliano Martinez was sidelined following a head-on collision in the Everton game, and he had earlier produced a superb stop to deny Marmoush from close range.
Chelsea’s attacking unit was described as anonymous in the absence of Joao Pedro, with Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers frequently losing possession. Palmer received an initial yellow for clattering into Mateus Fernandes in an off-the-ball incident and was later shown a second yellow for standing on Conor Gallagher’s ankles, reducing Chelsea to 10 men. Match statistics posted after the game summarised Palmer’s evening as: Cole Palmer did NOT shine vs. Tottenham:• 0 goals • 2 shots• 1/3 successful dribbles• 2 key passes• 2 fouls• 1 red card
James Maddison, who had recently returned from an 18-month injury layoff to make his first start in over a year against Coventry City, lasted less than five minutes of the second half before going down holding his thigh. He was substituted and replaced by Conor Gallagher and appeared distraught as he left the pitch. BBC reporter Nizaar Kinsella blamed his injury on the poor weather conditions, writing: "Conor Gallagher is coming on. To be honest, Maddison took several heavy tackles in this poor weather, I'd argue perhaps it wasn't the best match to utilise him in."
Tottenham doubled their advantage in the 87th minute when Mathys Tel took advantage of the numerical edge to score with a solo effort, completing a 2-0 win that was Tottenham’s second-ever victory at Stamford Bridge. The result ended in Spurs’ favour with Chelsea reduced to ten men after Palmer’s dismissal and Penders’ own goal proving decisive.
