Towhid Hridoy's unbeaten 242 sets new Bangladesh Test record in Sylhet

Towhid Hridoy scored an unbeaten 242 during the third day of the second Test against West Indies in Sylhet on Saturday, becoming Bangladesh's highest individual Test scorer and producing the innings that changed the match's momentum.
The 25-year-old reached his 242 not out off 359 deliveries, including 22 fours and 11 sixes, to eclipse Mushfiqur Rahim's previous Bangladesh Test best of 219; he is the fourth Bangladesh batter to register a Test double century, joining Mushfiqur Rahim, Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan, and did so in only his third Test appearance, converting his maiden Test century into a double hundred.
Bangladesh began the day on 88 for three but were later in a precarious position at 184 for seven before Hridoy's innings rescued the innings in reply to West Indies' first-innings total of 356.
Hridoy brought up his maiden Test century off 171 deliveries and then accelerated, finding support from Taijul Islam in a 117-run eighth-wicket stand; Taijul scored 22 off 56 balls before Jomel Warrican took his wicket. He then added a further 85 runs with Taskin Ahmed for the ninth wicket; Taskin made 12 before Jayden Seales dismissed him, and Hridoy remained unbeaten as Bangladesh finished at 386 for nine to secure a 30-run first-innings lead.
Earlier in the morning session Bangladesh had looked vulnerable after losing four wickets, with Jomel Warrican accounting for Mushfiqur Rahim, Litton Das and Hasan Mahmud, and Roston Chase removing Mehidy Hasan Miraz.
Hridoy's double century followed another notable recent performance: in September he scored an unbeaten 350 for Bangladesh A against South Africa A in the second four-day match at Potchefstroom, resuming on 204 overnight and finishing 350 off 481 deliveries with 27 fours and 10 sixes, becoming the first Bangladesh batter to score 350 in first-class cricket and surpassing Tamim Iqbal's national record of 334 not out.
After conceding a 30-run first-innings deficit, West Indies began their second innings with openers Brandon King and Joshua Da Silva negotiating four overs without loss and reaching seven without loss before bad light ended the third day's play; they were still trailing Bangladesh by 23 runs at stumps with all 10 second-innings wickets intact, and with two days remaining Bangladesh will look to make early inroads into the West Indies batting order and build on the advantage created by their record-breaking batter.
