Marcus Trescothick said on Friday he would like to stay part of England’s coaching group after serving as interim head coach for the three-Test series against Pakistan, which opened with England beating Pakistan by an innings and 103 runs at Headingley.

Trescothick, who served as an assistant under Brendon McCullum, has taken the head coach role for the three Tests against Pakistan and said he would welcome a continued role while acknowledging the decision is not his to make. "I’d love to carry on, of course," he said. "First and foremost, I want to be involved in all formats of the game because it’s a wonderful place to be, working with the best and seeing England cricketers do well. But that’s not really for me to judge, so I’ll wait and see what happens."

England have not yet announced the coaching staff Stephen Fleming will work with when he succeeds as Test head coach, but Fleming has been in regular contact with captain Joe Root and Trescothick during the Pakistan series preparations. Trescothick said their exchanges were frequent as Fleming sought updates on plans and training: "We’ve been exchanging messages every day just to keep topping up on what we’re trying to do."

Former Australia batter Mike Hussey confirmed he had received a casual approach from Fleming about joining England’s Test set-up and described the contact as informal. "We get on really well and have worked a lot together," Hussey told Fox Sports News. "It was just a bit of a passing comment, really, saying: 'Look, what do you reckon? Would you think about being the batting coach?'"

Hussey said he had not had time to consider the proposal after returning from coaching in the Hundred. "I have not been able to give it any thought whatsoever. I’ve just got back from the UK myself with coaching in the Hundred. So I haven’t thought about it at all," he said, adding: "Would I? I wouldn’t say never to anything really, whether it’d be England, whether it be Australia, India, Pakistan, South Africa. I just love the coaching side of the game and just to be able to work with different players."

Hussey has previous experience working with England, having acted as a consultant when they won the T20 World Cup in Australia four years ago. Trescothick described Fleming’s input while planning during the Hundred as supportive and clear about how he wanted his style reflected: "He wanted to touch base, see how things were planned out, how everyone had trained and getting the group back together." "Probably the most poignant part, really, when we were planning during the Hundred and working out how it was all going to work, he was adamant that me and Joe take it on and just run with what we feel is right to try and get the group back in shape, with a few pointers on what he wanted and how he could see his style being implemented within that group."

England have yet to confirm the coaching staff Fleming will assemble, and Fleming’s first series in charge will be against South Africa in the winter.
