UEFA Super Cup: all winners and competition history

The winners of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League meet each year in the UEFA Super Cup, an annual contest founded in 1972. Paris Saint-Germain are listed as the incumbent holders of the trophy.

The competition began in 1972 and originally pitted the European Cup winners against the victors of the European/UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup until that runners-up tournament was discontinued in 1999. The European Cup was renamed the UEFA Champions League in 1993, and UEFA later merged the Cup Winners’ Cup with the UEFA Cup, which itself was rebranded as the Europa League in 2009. The 1999 Super Cup, played under the original configuration, saw Lazio defeat Manchester United 1-0.

From 1998 the Super Cup was switched from two-legged ties held in winter—one match at each participant’s stadium—to a single match staged in August at a neutral venue. The Stade Louis II in Monaco hosted the fixture from 1998 through 2012. Since 2013 the game has been held at a different venue in Europe each year.

Ajax Amsterdam were the first winners of the competition, lifting the trophy in 1973. AC Milan were the first club to claim back-to-back Super Cups, winning consecutive editions in 1989 and 1990.
