United States complete comeback at Medinah to retain Presidents Cup

The United States completed a comeback on the final day at Medinah to beat the Internationals and retain the Presidents Cup, finishing with a 17-13 victory. The hosts overcame a three-point deficit going into Sunday to secure the win.

The US team contained eight of the world's 11 top-ranked players and had been looking to avoid only a second defeat since the biennial competition began 32 years ago. Medinah was the site of Team Europe's famous Ryder Cup comeback in 2012, a fact noted by participants during the event. The singles matches on Sunday proved decisive for the hosts.

The Americans won nine of the 12 singles matches to turn the tie in their favour. Jacob Bridgeman secured the decisive point by holing a four-foot par putt at the 18th to seal a one-up win over Australia's Min Woo Lee. That result completed the hosts' rally on the final day.

Other singles winners for the United States included Cameron Young, Justin Thomas, Scottie Scheffler, Chris Gotterup, Collin Morikawa, Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele and Jackson Koivun. The USA players hugged team captain Brandt Snedeker after victory was secured. The win restored the trophy to the hosts.

"I told the guys last night that funny stuff happens here. Medinah's got a history of funny things happening," said US captain Brandt Snedeker, who was a member of the team beaten by Europe in 2012.

"The US team came out firing, we knew they would. "It was on a knife edge all day. If some of those one downs we had out there had flipped to one up, the numbers looked really good and who knows what momentum that could give," said International captain Geoff Ogilvy.

US President Donald Trump was in attendance in his role as honorary chairman, greeting the players and making a speech before the matches got under way.

The United States retained the Presidents Cup for an 11th successive time with the 17-13 win at Medinah.
