Urvil Patel’s maiden double hundred and Gujarat pacers leave Kerala struggling in Ranji Trophy Elite Group C

Urvil Patel scored a maiden First Class double century as Gujarat seized control against Kerala in their Ranji Trophy Elite Group C match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, the end of the second day’s play. Kerala, replying to Gujarat’s 1st-innings 534 for nine declared, were 74 for three at stumps with Vishnu Vinod on 21 and Sachin Baby on 14.

Urvil finished unbeaten on 210 from 227 balls, hitting 17 fours and six sixes, and his innings featured a double century reached off 214 balls. Gujarat declared on 534 for nine in 144.2 overs; Aarya Desai made 95 and Vishal Jayswal scored 77 before being run out. Extras were 12 and the fall of the last wicket came at 534.

Kerala’s reply faltered early under a short, incisive burst from Gujarat’s seamers, with left-arm medium-pacer Arzan Nagwaswalla taking 2 for 24 and Chintan Gaja 1 for 30. The three wickets to fall were Abhishek P. Nair c Urvil b Nagwaswalla 10, Rohan S. Kunnummal c sub (Priyesh) b Nagwaswalla 11 and Varun Nayanar c Hingrajia b Gaja 17, leaving Kerala 74 for three in 23 overs.

The overnight pair of Urvil and Vishal Jayswal resumed on Tuesday morning and pushed the Kerala attack back by finding boundaries regularly. Urvil targeted the spinners, notably Aditya Sarvate, while Vishal Jayswal was run out for 77 following a mix-up with his partner.

After Vishal’s dismissal, N.P. Basil briefly revived Kerala’s hopes by trapping Chintan Gaja lbw for one. Debutant Amit Desai contributed 36 and, together with Urvil, added 78 for the eighth wicket before Sarvate accounted for Amit as his second wicket of the innings.

Siddharth Desai then joined Urvil and the pair put on 82 for the ninth wicket, with Urvil accelerating as he approached 200. He reached his double century with a single off Sarvate and remained 210 not out at the declaration.

At stumps Gujarat had declared 534 for nine and Kerala were 74 for three in reply; Gujarat’s bowling figures in Kerala’s brief innings included Gaja 8-2-30-1, Nagwaswalla 6-2-24-2, Amit 1-0-6-0, Siddharth 6-3-8-0 and Jayswal 2-0-6-0 in the Ranji Trophy Elite Group C match.
