Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was dismissed for eight on his Duleep Trophy debut for East Zone in the quarter-final against North East Zone at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru on August 23, 2026. The 15-year-old’s innings lasted six deliveries and he entered the match as East Zone’s vice-captain.

Asked to bat first, East Zone sent Sooryavanshi and Abhimanyu Easwaran out to open; the left-hander showed immediate attacking intent. Bishworjit Konthoujam bowled the over in which Sooryavanshi struck two successive boundaries—tucking one through mid-wicket and then punching one through cover—before being dismissed. Sooryavanshi has been entrusted with leadership roles beyond this fixture: he is deputy to India wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan in the East Zone squad, the group also includes Mohammed Shami, and he was named Bihar’s vice-captain for the opening two rounds of the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy.

Konthoujam altered his line and length on the final delivery of the over, pitching a good-length ball just outside off that cramped Sooryavanshi. The batter attempted to play on the up through point but the shot carried to the fielder at gully, ending the brief innings.

At the time of writing East Zone had recovered to 110/2 after 23 overs, with Kumar Kushagra completing his fifty and Sudip Kumar Gharami providing solid support. That partnership helped steady the innings after the early dismissals of Sooryavanshi and Easwaran.

Sooryavanshi’s selection as East Zone vice-captain followed a rapid rise through limited-overs cricket: he made his senior India debut against England in Manchester, scored 81 off 49 balls against Zimbabwe in Harare, and jumped 230 places in the latest ICC T20I rankings. The Duleep Trophy appearance was framed as a red-ball audition intended to give him exposure against experienced first-class players.

North East Zone appeared to have a clear plan for the youngster, and Konthoujam executed that plan after Sooryavanshi’s bright start. The early wicket removed one of East Zone’s most closely watched batters and forced the side to rebuild.

There remains an opportunity for Sooryavanshi to alter the match narrative in the second innings; a substantial contribution later in the game could help erase his opening disappointment and provide East Zone an important boost in their bid to progress.
