Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the 15-year-old East Zone vice-captain, took two wickets for East Zone against North East Zone in the Duleep Trophy on August 25, 2026, striking twice in the space of four deliveries.
Sooryavanshi, who has made his name with powerful hitting and has drawn attention in the IPL and in early T20Is for India, was playing at the start of the new season as he adjusted from T20 cricket to the longer format; he had also been handed the role of East Zone vice-captain despite limited first-class experience. The appearance allowed him to show a different facet of his game when he bowled left-arm orthodox spin and made an immediate impact.
Bowling for East Zone against North East Zone, Sooryavanshi picked up two wickets in the space of four deliveries, a burst that coincided with North East Zone being 79/7 in the 2nd innings after following on. The second dismissal was Imliwati Lemtur, beaten by a quicker delivery that produced a nick to the keeper, with Ishan Kishan completing the catch behind the stumps. Those two dismissals in the same over offered Sooryavanshi a clear bowling cameo amid the match situation.
Earlier in East Zone's innings Sooryavanshi opened the batting and scored eight runs from six deliveries, hitting two boundaries before losing his wicket and failing to convert the brisk start into a larger score. While his batting remains the prominent feature of his profile, the bowling spell added another statistical contribution to his match figures.
Whether bowling becomes a regular part of his game remains to be seen; two wickets in an over provided an entertaining reminder that Sooryavanshi can contribute with the ball when called upon.
