Vaishnavi Adkar and Rutuja Bhosale become first all-Indian pair to reach a WTA 250 final at Chennai Open

On Saturday at the SDAT Tennis Stadium in Chennai, Vaishnavi Adkar and Rutuja Bhosale defeated second seeds Weronika Falkowska and Alana Smith 6-2, 2-6, [10-8] in the Chennai Open semi-final to become the first all-Indian pair to reach a WTA 250 doubles final.
Adkar, 21, reached her first Chennai Open doubles final while 30-year-old Bhosale progressed one round further than her semi-final finish at last year’s edition; the duo are also the first Indian women’s doubles pair to make the final at the Chennai Open and the first all-Indian pairing to reach a WTA 250 doubles final.
Adkar and Bhosale took the opening set 6-2, breaking their opponents twice to seize control, but Falkowska and Smith responded by breaking twice in the second set to level the match at one set apiece before the contest was decided by a match tie-break, which the Indian pair won 10-8.
Reflecting on the result, Bhosale said, “It’s really special. The last time, I lost in the semi-finals, but that was a breakthrough moment for me. This time, I knew we had a tough opponent in the semi-finals. Making our first WTA final together, especially with Vaish, feels surreal.” Adkar commented on the partnership and the milestone, saying, “I was surprised when Rutuja asked me to partner her for doubles. It has always been fun sharing the court with her, and I’m really glad that I’ve reached my first WTA final.”
In women’s singles, top seed and defending champion Janice Tjen beat Robin Montgomery 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 23 minutes, striking six aces and 22 winners to Montgomery’s one ace and 17 winners, converting three of six break-point opportunities and winning 64 points to Montgomery’s 49.
Third seed Magda Linette recovered from a first-set loss to defeat seventh seed Anastasia Zakharova 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 and join Tjen in the singles final; in doubles, Naima Karamoko and Simona Waltert beat Isabelle Haverlag and Panna Udvardy 6-4, 6-4 to reach the title match.
The Chennai Open concludes on Sunday, November 8, with the singles final between Janice Tjen and Magda Linette and the doubles final pitting Vaishnavi Adkar and Rutuja Bhosale against Naima Karamoko and Simona Waltert.
