Vaishnavi Adkar beats Jodie Burrage 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 at WTA Chennai Open
Vaishnavi Adkar defeated Jodie Burrage 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 at the WTA Chennai Open on Tuesday at the SDAT Stadium in Nungambakkam, Chennai. The match lasted two hours and 46 minutes and was watched by spectators that included her mentor, former doubles World No. 1 Rohan Bopanna.
Adkar entered the WTA 250 event as a wild card and as the host nation's highest-ranked player; she began the year at World No. 681 and has nearly halved her ranking. The victory added another highlight to her breakout season and represented a significant step in her progress on Tour.
Former World No. 85 Jodie Burrage started the match aggressively, opening with a love hold that included two aces and immediately putting Adkar under pressure. Adkar surrendered her opening service game and trailed early before finding a foothold in the contest. The early momentum favored Burrage, who used her experience to dictate parts of the first set.
Adkar found a shift in fortune when a Burrage backhand clipped the tape and went wide; she then strung together three consecutive games to swing the match. That run did not secure an immediate clean sweep of the lead, but it relaxed Adkar's play and allowed her to regroup mentally. She avoided being overwhelmed by the occasion as the match progressed.
At 1-1 in the second set, Adkar held serve after a lengthy deuce game in which she produced winning lobs from both wings, prompting applause from Burrage. Adkar forced a deciding set and moved to a 3-1 advantage in the third before Burrage mounted a recovery with a series of forehand winners. Burrage later earned the opportunity to serve for the match at 5-3.
Adkar refused to yield and ultimately outlasted her more experienced opponent to complete the comeback. Burrage required a medical timeout before the final game as the humidity took its toll on her. The outcome delivered Adkar a hard-fought victory on a pleasant evening at the SDAT Stadium.
Other first-round results at the event included: Janice Tjen (Ina) bt Katherine Hui (USA) 6-1, 6-2; Polina Kudermetova (Uzb) bt Viktoria Morvayova (Svk) 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. Anastasia Zakharova (Rus) bt Polina Iatcenko (Rus) 7-6(3), 6-1, and Robin Montgomery (USA) bt Panna Udvardy (Hun) 6-4, 1-6, 6-1.
The win was Adkar’s maiden Tour-level victory and, having won her first-round match at the WTA Chennai Open, she advances to the tournament’s next stage.
