Vedaant Madhavan in India's 4x200m relay squad for Asian Games

Vedaant Madhavan will be part of India's men's 4x200m freestyle relay team at the Asian Games on Monday.

He first attracted significant attention in 2022 when he broke the national record in the men's 1500m freestyle at the 48th Junior National Aquatic Championships. His performances at the youth level helped establish him as one of India's promising swimmers, and he has since continued to compete in domestic and international events. The 19-year-old is yet to win a major event at the senior level but has made steady progress as he has moved into senior competition.

According to World Aquatics, Vedaant won bronze in the men's 4x200m freestyle relay at the Senior National Aquatics Championships in June this year, clocking 7:46.52.

At the Asian Games he will be part of a four-member Indian relay team that also includes Sajan Prakash, Aneesh Sunil Kumar Gowda and Dhakshan Shashikumar.

His swimming career has often received attention because of his father, actor R Madhavan, but Vedaant has previously spoken about his desire to be recognised for his own achievements. In a 2022 interview with DD India, he addressed the subject directly, saying: "I didn’t wanna live under my dad’s shadow. I wanted to make name for myself. I didn’t want to be just R Madhavan son."

Vedaant's progress since then has been measured largely through his performances in the pool; his national junior record in the 1500m freestyle was an early indication of his potential, while his results in relay events have given him further exposure to senior competition. The Asian Games now provide another test for his transition into senior-level meets.

The immediate task for the quartet is to negotiate the qualification round, with the final scheduled later in the day for those who make the cut.
