Verstappen beats Ferraris to take Singapore pole

Red Bull's Max Verstappen claimed pole position in qualifying for the Singapore Grand Prix on Saturday, beating the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, having also won the sprint race earlier that day.
Verstappen's pole was his second in a week and his first lap in final qualifying proved decisive; his time held off a second lap from Leclerc, which finished 0.054 seconds adrift. Hamilton was the closest to Verstappen after the opening runs but was unable to improve on his second attempt.
Most of the front runners struggled to better their first runs during the final phase of qualifying. Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli took fourth on the grid. McLaren's Lando Norris qualified fifth. Antonelli's team-mate George Russell set the sixth-fastest time but will drop to the back of the grid with a penalty for using too many engine parts.
McLaren's Oscar Piastri was the only driver in the top four teams other than Leclerc to improve on his second run but could do no better than qualify seventh. Alpine's Pierre Gasly and the Racing Bulls of Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad completed the top 10.
The Singapore Grand Prix race is scheduled for Sunday, 11 October at 13:00 BST, with live commentary on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra and live text updates on the BBC Sport website and app.
