Víctor Muñoz snatches 2-2 draw for Liverpool against Nottingham Forest at Anfield

Víctor Muñoz salvaged a 2-2 draw for Liverpool against Nottingham Forest at Anfield in a Premier League match on 29 August 2026, denying the visitors what looked set to be a late win.

Some of the billionaires behind Liverpool attended the opening Anfield performance of Andoni Iraola’s reign, but the match offered more questions than comforts for the hosts. Amit Bhatia and Lakshmi Mittal were invited guests of John W Henry as 1892 Holdings moved to acquire a 38% stake in the club; Jeff Bezos and Eduardo Saverin did not attend. The game also underlined concerns about the squad beyond the recent high-profile signings, including £123m acquisition Bradley Barcola.

Forest threatened from the first minutes, with long balls releasing Dan Ndoye behind Liverpool’s defence twice inside the opening six minutes, although the forward twice lost his footing. Alexis Mac Allister produced the first clear opening, feeding Cody Gakpo who was denied by an excellent Neco Williams tackle. Ola Aina and Ndoye combined to set up Igor Jesus early on, with Jérémy Jacquet blocking the resulting effort.

The visitors opened the scoring after a cleared corner was followed by a long clearance from Matz Sels back over Liverpool’s defence to Igor Jesus; the striker held up the ball and found Morgan Gibbs-White, who rolled a pass to the unmarked Ndoye to steer a low finish beyond Alisson. Florian Wirtz had an effort ruled out for offside in the build-up after Jeremie Frimpong was flagged, and Sels also tipped over a Wirtz header following a fine cross by Gakpo.

On the stroke of half-time Alisson produced a crucial save to turn an Igor Jesus attempt onto his crossbar. Liverpool levelled on the hour when Gakpo, receiving Wirtz’s pass and spinning away from two defenders, supplied a precise pass for Alexander Isak to tap home his first goal of the campaign. Gakpo’s involvement came amid reports he could be leaving depending on incoming transfers over the next few days.

Forest regained the lead from the penalty spot after a quick throw-in by Liam Delap released Neco Williams into the area; Williams’ follow-up shot was blocked when he was felled by the goalkeeper, who was booked for his protests. Gibbs-White converted the resulting penalty emphatically to restore Forest’s advantage.

Liverpool, improved by Iraola’s substitutions, fought back and Muñoz — the £34.5m summer signing from Osasuna — marked his home debut with a brilliant finish off the underside of the crossbar to level the match and rescue a point for Iraola’s work-in-progress. Iraola had also replaced both full-backs during the afternoon, with Dominik Szoboszlai finishing the game at right-back.
