Vincent Kompany, the manager of Bayern Munich, was discharged from hospital on Wednesday after collapsing at the club’s training facility six days earlier, Max Eberl, the club’s sports board member, told German television ARD.

Medical staff determined the cause to be meningeal irritation, which is an inflammation of the membrane that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. Kompany had been battling a sickness in the days preceding his breakdown and missed several team training sessions. He was in the dugout for Bayern’s Champions League match against Arsenal on Tuesday but did not attend the pre-game press conference.

Eberl spoke about Kompany’s condition before Bayern’s German Cup tie against Magdeburg and said: "It’s a meningeal irritation that caused this incident on Friday. He will now rest and take medication." He added: "I am very confident that he will be back on the touchline, operating at 100% very soon."

After collapsing at the club’s headquarters six days ago, the Belgian was brought to the hospital and is making progress toward recovery, the club said. "Given the circumstances, he’s doing well. He was discharged from the hospital today. That is the biggest and best news for all of us," Eberl told ARD.

Aaron Danks, an English assistant coach, took charge in Kompany’s absence. Danks led Bayern to a 3-1 victory against Freiburg on Sunday and a 6-1 win over Magdeburg on Wednesday while Kompany was unavailable.

Kompany’s return date has not been announced; the club has stated it would take "weeks, not days" for him to return to the dugout. He is likely to return after a few weeks.
