Kohli reached his fifty in 40 balls and, with nine runs needed, struck back-to-back boundaries to move to 59 and complete the 15,000-run landmark, then raised both hands towards Sachin Tendulkar and acknowledged the crowd’s standing ovation.

Tendulkar had reached 15,000 ODI runs in his 377th innings in 2007, making Kohli’s 303-innings achievement 74 innings faster; Tendulkar remains the all-time ODI run leader on 18,426. Kohli had previously overtaken Tendulkar as the fastest batter to 13,000 ODI runs, reaching that mark in 267 innings in 2023 compared with Tendulkar’s 321.

Before this innings, Kohli had scored 2,261 ODI runs against West Indies in 43 matches and 41 innings, including nine centuries and 11 fifties. The 15,000-run total makes Kohli only the second batter in men’s ODI history to reach that aggregate.
