Vithya Ramraj breaks 55s but finishes third in 400m hurdles at 2026 Asian Games

Vithya Ramraj finished third in the women's 400m hurdles final at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi–Nagoya, Japan on September 29, 2026, clocking 54.75 seconds as Mariam Kareem (UAE) won in a Games-record 54.31 and Adelina Zems (Kazakhstan) took silver in 54.58. The 28-year-old’s 54.75 moved her below the 55-second mark, a barrier she had been targeting since 2023.
Ramraj had equalled P.T. Usha’s long-standing national mark of 55.42 seconds in 2023 and entered the Asiad seeking further improvement on a time that had stood for more than four decades. Her progression in the event has been gradual: from a 59.70 best in 2018 to progressively faster times through 2022 and 2025, culminating in the sub-55 performance in 2026.
In the final at Aichi–Nagoya, Ramraj and Mariam Kareem were level over the closing hurdles before Kareem produced a decisive surge to win in a Games-record 54.31, with Zems moving past Ramraj to secure silver in 54.58 and Ramraj crossing third in 54.75. The podium times were 54.31, 54.58 and 54.75 respectively.
Breaking 55 seconds made Ramraj the first Indian woman to do so and left her 0.67 seconds faster than Usha’s 55.42. After the race she said: “I met Usha ma’am a year ago, and she said, ‘Go for 54 seconds.’ She encouraged me. So doing this today makes me so happy.”
On the wider performance lists, Ramraj’s 54.75 places her 187th on the all-time world list, where Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Femke Bol and Dalilah Muhammad lead with bests of 50.37, 50.95 and 51.58 respectively; the article notes she remains more than four seconds behind the world’s fastest mark. Her position in the world rankings improved from 56th before the Asiad to 35th in the current standings, and the time ranks her 12th in Asia, with Bahrain’s Kemi Adekoya leading the regional list and athletes from China, Kazakhstan and the UAE also prominent.
The article traces the development of Asian performances in the event, noting that when Usha set her 1984 mark the 55-second barrier had been broken predominantly by Europeans and a single African athlete. It adds that Usha remained the only Asian performance on the historical list until 1990 because World Athletics’ historical list records performances faster than 57.3 seconds only, and that there are now 12 Asian performances under 55 seconds.
Ramraj’s improvement has paralleled gains in the flat 400m. Her 400m best moved from 54.48 in 2018 to 51.96 in 2026, while her hurdles mark fell from 59.70 in 2018 to 54.75 in 2026. Her coach, Nepal Singh Rathore, said: “Only when she runs well in the flat, she can run hurdles well. Because speed plays a major role in all events,” and added, “Whenever she has improved in the flats, she has improved in the hurdles.”
Across the 2026 Asian Games Ramraj completed a three-medal haul: she anchored India to gold in the women’s 4×400m relay, took silver in the mixed 4×400m relay, and won the bronze in the individual 400m hurdles with her record 54.75.
