Vithya Ramraj’s late surge earns India silver in mixed 4x400m relay at Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games

India secured the silver medal in the mixed 4x400m relay at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya on Thursday after Vithya Ramraj produced a decisive final-leg effort. The team of Poovamma Raju, Vishal Thennarasu, Manu TS and Vithya Ramraj posted 3:14.46 in the final.

Bahrain claimed gold in the event, setting a Games record of 3:12.87, while Vietnam took bronze in 3:14.54, finishing 0.09 seconds behind India. The result meant India repeated the silver-medal finish they achieved at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games.

India had appeared set for bronze during the closing stages before Ramraj closed strongly to move her country into second place. Vithya Ramraj produced what the report described as a superb final leg, timing her surge in the closing metres and overtaking the rivals for the silver.

The Athletics Federation of India marked the finish on social media: "Silver shine in Nagoya! Seema Kumari also contributed to India's athletics haul on Thursday, winning bronze in the women's 10,000m with a time of 32:50.05 and ending a 16-year wait for an Asian Games medal in that event for India.

The two athletics medals on Thursday took India's overall tally at the Asian Games to 17.
