VVS Laxman could be given major Indian cricket role in September, Rajdeep Sardesai reports

VVS Laxman could be appointed to a major role in Indian cricket in September, Indian journalist Rajdeep Sardesai said on his podcast, according to reports published on Aug. 13, 2026.

Sardesai said the information was passed to him by a parliamentary reporter.

Laxman played 220 international matches and scored over 10,000 runs across formats. He scored 8,781 runs in 134 Test matches. After retirement he continued working with young cricketers and took on responsibilities within the BCCI, including coaching and mentoring roles. He is the head of the BCCI Centre of Excellence (formerly the National Cricket Academy) and, in that capacity, has emphasised workload tracking and player development over rehabilitation.

On his podcast Sardesai said: “I was told by one of my parliamentary reporters to be prepared that VVS Laxman is getting a very big assignment in Indian cricket in September. He is certainly the head of the Centre of Excellence, but he is now being groomed for a big task in Indian cricket. I don’t know what it is. It could be chairman of selectors or white-ball coach. There are many speculations. But someone well-known has told our reporters in Parliament about this.”

The reports list possibilities for Laxman’s next assignment, and one potential role mentioned is chairman of the selection committee. Becoming chairman of selectors would place Laxman in a position to influence player selection for the senior team.

With the ODI World Cup 2027 a year away, it is highly unlikely that the Indian head coach will be changed.
